0:01 Thank you for your interest in the University of California Santa Barbara, Master of technology management! 0:07 Today's presentation will provide you with an overview of the practice of Technology Management, why it is studied, and the value of a Master of Technology Management to advance your career leading technology- and innovation-driven companies. 0:25 But first, we hope to welcome you to beautiful Santa Barbara on the central coast of California, between the Santa Ynez mountains and the Pacific Ocean. 0:35 Santa Barbara and UCSB are located approximately 95 miles north of Los Angeles, and 300 miles south of the Bay Area and Silicon Valley. 0:45 Don't be fooled by appearances though. Even though UCSB is in a relatively small town, it is surrounded by a burgeoning technology and entrepreneurial hub, with familiar large companies such as Amazon and Sonos, as well as UCSB-founded companies such as Apeel. 1:04 So you might be wondering, what exactly is Technology Management, and why study it? 1:10 According to Klaus Schwab, founder and executive chairman of the World Economic Forum, humanity has entered the fourth industrial revolution, which builds on the digital revolution, and is expected to change the way humans create, exchange, and distribute value. 1:26 But, what's different about this revolution is that it is more than just a technological leap of innovation. 1:32 The fourth industrial revolution will be driven by the convergence and blurring of digital, biological, and physical innovations, including artificial intelligence, robotics, the Internet of Things, 3d printing, genetic engineering, quantum computing, and more. 1:49 As a result, organizations will become increasingly complex as they adapt to technological change and manage a multidisciplinary workforce distributed around the globe. 2:01 Technology Management is the study of this new world order, and the ways in which companies both large and small can adapt and thrive. 2:12 Technology Management is a multidisciplinary field of science that examines the opportunities and challenges of technological innovation, industry disruption, and organizational change, and their influence on business performance and competitive advantage. 2:28 At the core of Technology Management are five key factors, or core competencies, that leaders must assimilate into their business practices. These serve as the foundation for the Master of Technology Management curriculum. 2:41 The practice of Technology Management requires that multidisciplinary teams work fluidly across geographic and organizational boundaries, employing agile business processes and practices to rapidly address market challenges and opportunities. 2:56 In this model, people are at the heart of product ideation, creation, and delivery in an effort to provide continuous customer value employing sustainable business practices. 3:07 The process of Technology Management is an ongoing virtuous cycle, with implications in the way organizations address human capital, finance, project management, product management, business strategy, data science, marketing, and organizational development. 3:25 Today's rapid pace of innovation and organizational change can be daunting for even the most experienced professional. Those early in their careers can find it particularly challenging as they prepare for leadership roles on projects, products, and teams. 3:41 UC Santa Barbara's Master of Technology Management is a stem-designated program that offers motivated early-to-mid career professionals the essential business knowledge and entrepreneurial mindset to expand their leadership opportunities within technology- and innovation-driven firms. 4:00 Over the course of one full academic year, students will explore the theory and practice of product and corporate strategy, management of products, projects and teams, and the various methodologies for growing and scaling businesses. 4:15 The MTM curriculum also includes a field practicum, in which student teams have the opportunity to apply the theories and concepts learned. 4:24 Many MTM students also choose to participate in Technology Management's annual New Venture Competition, which provides the opportunity to take a deep dive into forming and building viable startup businesses that address real world challenges and opportunities. 4:41 The MTM cohort comprises approximately 40 to 45 students with backgrounds in STEM and the social sciences.
